From Apprentice to Expert: My 15 Year Journey as an HVAC Technician in Ontario

My 15 Year Journey as an HVAC Technician in Canada Energy Solution

Hey folks, I’m Terence, and I’ve been crawling through attics, basements, and mechanical rooms across Ontario for the past fifteen years. Started out as a green apprentice fresh from College’s HVAC program back in 2010, and let me tell you , those early days taught me the real difference between classroom theory and hands on field experience. Every service call was a learning opportunity that shaped the technician I am today.

My Journey in the HVAC Trade

Over the years, I’ve gained extensive experience with every major HVAC brand serving Canadian homes and businesses. Each manufacturer brings unique innovations to the table. Lennox leads the industry in energy efficiency ratings, with their variable speed systems delivering exceptional comfort control. I’ve completed advanced training on their SunSource solar ready heat pumps , fascinating technology that’s gaining traction here in Ontario.

Carrier systems showcase impressive engineering, particularly in their commercial rooftop units. My EPA 608 certification and NATE certification have been invaluable when working on their larger refrigeration systems. Goodman has really stepped up their game with accessibility , their units are designed with service technicians in mind, making preventative maintenance straightforward and efficient.

Trane’s variable refrigerant flow technology continues to impress me, especially in multi zone commercial applications. Their commitment to building robust equipment means I see many units still running strong after 20+ years with proper maintenance. Bryant’s Evolution series offers excellent humidity control , crucial for our Ontario summers. And Rheem’s integration of smart home technology into their HVAC systems reflects where our industry is heading.

What really matters isn’t the brand name on the equipment , it’s proper installation, regular maintenance, and working with certified technicians who understand load calculations, ductwork design, and local building codes. I’ve seen budget systems outlast premium ones simply because they were installed correctly and maintained regularly.

Real clients’ cases from Canada Energy Solution

Working with Canada Energy Solution has given me incredible opportunities to solve complex HVAC challenges. Last winter, I helped retrofit a century home in Hamilton with a hybrid heating system. We integrated a high efficiency heat pump with their existing gas furnace, creating a dual fuel system that automatically switches between electricity and gas based on outdoor temperatures and utility rates. The homeowners saw a 40% reduction in heating costs while maintaining perfect comfort.

Another rewarding project involved designing a custom ventilation solution for a Mississauga restaurant. The kitchen’s negative pressure was pulling dining room air (and customer comfort) right out the exhaust hood. By installing a dedicated make up air unit with proper controls, we balanced the building pressure and improved both kitchen working conditions and dining room comfort. The owner said it was the best investment they’d made in years.

One of my favorite installations was for a young family in Newmarket dealing with uneven temperatures throughout their home. After performing comprehensive load calculations and ductwork analysis, we implemented a zoned system with smart thermostats. Now they can set different temperatures for the nursery, home office, and living areas , all while maximizing energy efficiency. It’s installations like these that remind me why I love troubleshooting and creating custom solutions.

Looking Forward, Sharing the Knowledge

After fifteen years of performing installations, repairs, and preventative maintenance, I’ve accumulated valuable insights about HVAC systems that I’m eager to share. My upcoming posts will cover essential topics every homeowner should understand.

I’ll be writing about proper maintenance schedules that actually make sense for Ontario’s climate, how to maximize your system’s energy efficiency, and understanding those mysterious sounds your furnace makes. You’ll learn about heat pump technology (including whether they really work in Canadian winters), the importance of proper ductwork sizing, and how regular maintenance can extend equipment life by decades.

I’ll also share professional tips on improving indoor air quality, optimizing thermostat settings for comfort and savings, and recognizing when it’s time for repairs versus replacement. Plus, I’ll decode the technical jargon , from SEER ratings to MERV filters, in plain English.

This trade has taught me that success comes from continuous learning. Whether it’s mastering new refrigerants, understanding evolving building codes, or integrating smart home technology, there’s always something new. My mechanical aptitude might have gotten me started, but it’s the problem solving skills and commitment to customer service excellence that’s built my career.

So stay tuned, ask questions, and remember, investing in professional HVAC installation and maintenance isn’t just about comfort, it’s about efficiency, safety, and long term savings. See you in the field!
