Andrew’s Law Is Now Ontario Law: One Year Later, a Family’s Fight Has Made Our Roads Safer

We are not talking about air conditioners or insulation today. Last September, we shared the story of a local family who lost their husband and father to a reckless driver north of Toronto. That story stayed with a lot of people, ourselves included. We want to share what has come out of it, because it is now protecting every family in Ontario.
On August 3, 2025, a 35-year-old husband and father named Andrew Cristillo was driving home with his wife Christina and their three young daughters on Highway 48 in Whitchurch-Stouffville. In one violent instant, their vehicle was struck head-on by a reckless driver travelling at high speed.
Andrew was killed at the scene. Christina and their three girls, all under the age of seven, were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Two of Andrew’s daughters had to face their birthdays in the weeks that followed without their father there to celebrate with them.

As we wrote in our original article last September, the details of this case shook our entire community. The 18-year-old driver who caused the crash was not a first-time offender. He was already facing charges from an earlier collision involving Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s vehicle, as reported by Global News. Yet somehow, he was still allowed behind the wheel.
Today, one year later, we are writing to share the remarkable developments that have unfolded since that terrible night. This is a story of grief transformed into purpose, of a community that refused to accept the unacceptable, and of a government that listened and acted.
CityNews: Ontario to introduce ‘Andrew’s Law’ in dangerous driving crackdown
Justice in the Courtroom
On April 27, 2026, the driver, Jaiwin Victor Kirubananthan, now 19 years old, appeared before a judge at the Newmarket courthouse. On the day his trial was set to begin, he chose instead to plead guilty to all five charges: dangerous driving causing death, failing to remain at the scene of a crash where death occurred, and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm to Andrew’s three young daughters. CBC News, Toronto Star, CP24, and Global News all covered the proceedings.

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 22, 2026. Speaking outside the courtroom, Andrew’s brother Jordan called the guilty plea “a step in the right direction” and expressed his hope that the court’s decision will reflect the severity of what happened that night. “Our fight does not stop here,” Jordan told the Toronto Sun.
CBC News: Those convicted of fatal dangerous driving could receive lifetime bans in Ontario
From Petition to Provincial Law: The Birth of Andrew’s Law
What happened after Andrew’s death is nothing short of extraordinary.
Twelve days after losing his brother, Jordan Cristillo launched a petition on Change.org calling for tougher dangerous driving laws in Ontario. He called it “Andrew’s Law.” The petition asked for three things: lifetime driving bans for those convicted of dangerous driving causing death, immediate roadside licence suspensions for dangerous driving behaviour, and enhanced penalties for repeat offenders.
The response from the community was overwhelming. Within weeks, the petition had gathered more than 43,000 signatures from people across Ontario and beyond.

On September 5, 2025, Premier Doug Ford met personally with the Cristillo family and promised that his government would introduce legislation that fall. True to that commitment, on November 25, 2025, the Ontario government formally tabled Andrew’s Law as part of Bill 75, the Keeping Criminals Behind Bars Act. The announcement was covered extensively by CBC News, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.
And then, on June 2, 2026, just six days ago, Andrew’s Law received Royal Assent. It is now the law of the Province of Ontario. As reported by the Toronto Sun and Toronto Star, the journey from petition to law took 189 days. When the updated news reached us, we applauded, because this is not just a law on paper, this is real protection for every family on every road in Ontario.
What Andrew’s Law Means for Every Ontario Family
Andrew’s Law introduces several critical protections that apply to every person who drives or walks on Ontario’s roads:
Lifetime Licence Suspension for Dangerous Driving Causing Death. Anyone convicted of dangerous driving that results in death will have their driver’s licence suspended indefinitely. They will never be permitted to drive on Ontario roads again.
90-Day Immediate Roadside Suspension. Police officers now have the authority to suspend a driver’s licence on the spot for 90 days and impound the vehicle for 7 days if they have reasonable grounds to believe the driver has committed a dangerous driving offence. This means officers no longer have to wait for a court conviction before getting a dangerous driver off the road.
Increased Penalties for Driving While Suspended. Fines for driving while under suspension have been increased to up to $20,000. This directly addresses the problem at the heart of Andrew’s case: a driver who should not have been behind the wheel but faced no meaningful barrier to getting back on the road.
Stronger Distracted Driving Penalties. The law also strengthens penalties for certain distracted driving offences, particularly those involving commercial vehicle operators.
Every single one of these measures exists to close the gap that cost Andrew Cristillo his life. A dangerous driver who had already been charged was allowed to keep driving, and an innocent family paid the price. Andrew’s Law makes sure that gap is closed.
Thank You, Premier Ford and the Ontario Government

We want to take a moment to sincerely thank Premier Doug Ford and every member of the Ontario government who worked to bring Andrew’s Law to life.
From the moment Premier Ford met with the Cristillo family in September 2025, the government treated this issue with the seriousness and urgency it deserved. The legislation was tabled within months and moved through the legislative process with clear bipartisan support. This was not a political gesture. This was a government listening to the people it serves and acting decisively to protect them.
The provisions in Andrew’s Law are not abstract policy changes. They are protections for every family in Ontario. Every parent driving their children to school. Every couple coming home from dinner. Every person walking along a neighbourhood street. These laws exist so that no other family has to endure what the Cristillos have endured because a known dangerous driver was allowed to stay behind the wheel.
Thank you to every legislator, every staff member, and every public servant who contributed to making this law a reality.
Thank You to Every Person Who Donated
We also want to express our deepest gratitude to the thousands of people who contributed to the GoFundMe campaign for the Cristillo family. As reported by CBC News, the campaign raised over $540,000.
Christina Cristillo continues her courageous battle with Stage Four cancer. She now faces that fight without her husband, her best friend, her rock. At the same time, she is raising three young daughters who are still processing the loss of their father. Every dollar donated to that campaign represents a person who said, “I see your pain, and I want to help.” Every contribution, whether $10 or $10,000, has provided tangible support for medical care, for childcare, for the daily necessities of a family rebuilding their lives under circumstances no one should ever have to face.
To every donor: your generosity matters more than you may ever know.
Jordan Cristillo: A Brother’s Legacy
Perhaps the most powerful part of this entire story is the role played by Andrew’s brother, Jordan Cristillo. In the midst of unimaginable grief, Jordan chose action over despair.
After Andrew’s Law received Royal Assent, Jordan shared his thoughts with the Toronto Sun:
“What we achieved here is closing a critical gap in our system that has been causing innocent people their lives. Unfortunately, my brother is one of the victims of these types of tragedies. They are totally preventable and it is fantastic to see a government actually act on closing a known gap.”
He added: “Again, tragic that my brother had to be the straw that broke the camel’s back, but I know he would be proud knowing his legacy is protecting the rest of us on the roads.”

Those words speak to something fundamental about the kind of community we want to live in. A community where people do not stand by. A community where tragedy is met not with helplessness, but with purpose.
At Canada Energy Solution, our work has always been about more than heating, cooling, and insulation. It is about the families who live in the homes we serve. It is about the communities we are part of. It is about making sure the people around us feel safe, comfortable, and supported.
The reason we want to share this update today because the story did not end with a headline. It ended with a law. A law that protects every family in Ontario, the law that protects you and me.
We are proud to be part of a community that rallied behind the Cristillos. We are grateful to a government that turned that community’s voice into lasting legislation. And we continue to stand with Christina and her daughters as they move forward.
Looking Ahead: June 22, 2026

The sentencing hearing for the driver who took Andrew’s life is scheduled for June 22, 2026, at the Newmarket courthouse. The Cristillo family and their supporters will be there. The outcome of that hearing will be another chapter in this story.
Andrew Cristillo was a husband, a father, and a friend. He was not given a choice in any of this. But through the love of his brother, the strength of his wife, the compassion of his community, and the action of our government, his life continues to protect others.
Rest in peace, Andrew. Your legacy is making Ontario safer for all of us.
